How a biology student fell in love with code — and why it's the best decision I've ever made.
Like most Pakistani students who scored well in matric, I was told the smartest path was FSc Pre-Medical. The plan was simple: pre-med → MBBS → doctor → a stable, respected life. Everyone around me was doing it. My family was proud. The script was already written.
I studied biology, chemistry, physics. I memorized cycles, diagrams, and formulas. I did well. But something was off. I kept finding myself more curious about the machines and systems around the biology than the biology itself. How did hospital databases work? How did diagnostic software identify diseases? How did MRI machines actually process images?
During my second year of pre-med, I opened a laptop and typed my first line of code — just a simple "Hello World" in Python. That one line changed the trajectory of my life. Suddenly I could build things. I could create logic from nothing, solve problems with pure thought, and watch ideas become real, working software.
I started spending my evenings on freeCodeCamp, YouTube tutorials, and Cisco Networking Academy courses instead of reviewing biology notes. My grades held steady, but my heart had already moved on. I wasn't becoming a doctor — I was becoming a builder.
Telling my family I wanted to leave the medical path was the hardest conversation of my life. In our culture, pre-med to BS Software Engineering isn't just a career change — it feels like giving up. There were doubts, questions, silences at the dinner table.
But I knew. I showed them the projects I'd been quietly building. I talked through the future of technology — how AI would reshape every industry, how cloud computing was becoming the backbone of everything, how DevOps engineers were among the most in-demand professionals in the world. Slowly, they came around.
It wasn't an escape from medicine. It was a redirection of the same impulse — the desire to heal, to help, to solve hard problems. Just through technology instead of prescriptions.
I enrolled in BS Software Engineering at Virtual University of Pakistan. From day one, I committed to going beyond the syllabus. I completed 45+ external courses across Computer Science, Mathematics, and Business from Saylor University, Cisco Networking Academy, Mindluster, and Simplilearn. Every course came with a verified certificate — because I believe in proving what I learn.
I also completed 16 industry job simulations from companies like AWS, JPMorgan Chase, Accenture, BCG X, Mastercard, Siemens, and Boston Dynamics — real workflows that professional engineering teams use every day. These weren't videos. They were hands-on challenges with deliverables and evaluations.
Alongside academics, I started taking on real client work. I built and shipped 3 live production websites — including a full SaaS platform with three digital tools. Every project taught me something no classroom could: how to deal with real users, real deadlines, real problems.
Right now, I'm in my final year of BS Software Engineering. My next focus areas are Cloud Computing and DevOps — I'm actively building projects around AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines. I believe the future belongs to engineers who can not only write code, but also deploy it reliably, scale it globally, and automate its entire lifecycle.
Long term, I want to work at the intersection of AI and Cloud — building intelligent systems that run on infrastructure that scales itself. I want to ship products used by millions, mentor other self-taught engineers, and prove that the road from a small college in Pakistan to world-class engineering is not just possible — it's inevitable when you refuse to quit.
